3 Weeks Roadmap to Learn Power BI (with free resources)

Follow this easy and proven roadmap to learn Power BI in just 3 weeks.

What you need to Succeed

You need,

  • A Windows computer (Power BI Desktop is available only on Windows)
  • Basic data skills (if you used one of Excel / Google Sheets / SQL / R in the past, you are good to go)
  • True commitment for the 3 weeks. Don’t half ass this plan. See thru it for amazing results.

If you prefer to watch instead of reading, check out the roadmap video below or click here to see it on my TELUGU తెలుగు channel.

Week 1: The foundations

Day 1:

  • Download FREE Power BI Desktop for your computer (works on Windows only). https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/products/power-bi/desktop
  • Go thru my getting started with Power BI in 10 minutes video and build your very first page / report in Power BI

Days 2-5:

  1. Identify one or two business domains for which you want to apply Power BI (examples: HR, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Finance, Marketing, Project Management, Medical etc.)
  2. Go to Kaggle.com and download free datasets in that domain. Find high quality datasets in CSV format with plenty of rows. Don’t overthink, pick something.
  3. Load up the data into Power BI and learn how to use Power Query to clean, transform and pre-process the data.
  4. Watch my Power Query in 30 minutes video to learn how to work with PQ
  5. Repeat the steps 2-4 few more times, until you are comfortable with Power Query.
  6. Here is a Power Query case study with netflix data.

Days 6 & 7:

  • Offline learning. Read an article or two about Power Query. Think about it while going on a walk or staring out of the window or cleaning the dishes.
  • Day dream about all the awesome things you are going to do once you have Power BI skills 🤔

Week 2: Modeling the Data

Day 1:

  • Learn the basics of data modeling in Power BI. Use the data you previously gathered and create your first semantic model in Power BI. Here is a quick demo – Learn Data Modeling & Star Schema in Power BI just 20 minutes.

Days 2-5:

  • DAX is the cornerstone of Power BI analysis. While most everyday DAX can be written with AI these days, learning the fundamentals and do’s & don’ts help you navigate the murky waters of AI better. So focus this week on learning the concepts right. Learn the syntax basics, evaluation context, filter propagation and how to write DAX for common business scenarios.
  • Resources to help you:
  • 📺 Learn 80% of Essential DAX in just 1 hour – 1 hour to get all the basics right
  • 📺 Beginner to PRO DAX Masterclass – another masterclass with dax deepdive
  • 📕 Supercharge Power BI – My go to book for DAX basics
  • 🌐 Dax.guide – website for dax reference

Days 6 & 7:

  • Time to practice. Start with an unclean dataset. Clean & transform it using Power Query (week 1). Model and analyze it with DAX to answer business questions. Rinse and repeat with few more datasets until the concepts sink in.
  • When you go on a walk this weekend, think how awesome you are for learning DAX. Imagine doing crazy things with data 🤔💭

Week 3: Making Fancy Business Reports

Day 1:

  • Now that you know enough Power Query and DAX, let’s start creating visuals and reports. Start with a simple 1 page report on any topic you fancy. If you are not sure where to begin, start with this excellent Hotel Dashboard Masterclass.

Days 2-5:

  • Power BI has dozens of visuals. Learn when, why and how to use them with this quick tutorial – Power BI visuals explainer
  • Understand simple design principles like Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Positioning. Read a book or two about designing visual things. I suggest The non-designers design book and Don’t make me think.
  • Read about information design and dashboard principles. Understand how to gather user requirements and turn them into insightful reports. I recommend reading Storytelling with Data.
  • Learn useful Power BI techniques to create amazing reports. Tooltips, bookmarks, drillthrough, visual calculations and visual interactions.

Days 6 & 7:

  • Time to practice. Pick a business domain (such as HR / supply chain / finance etc). Gather some data. Come up with a few reporting requirements (get the help of AI if you are stuck). Clean & Transform the data to meet your requirements. Build semantic model. Develop KPIs (DAX measures) to address the report needs. Create a multi-page report in Power BI.
  • Bonus: Figure out how to publish and share your report. Think about how to update the report when the data changes. Understand the life-cycle of Power BI reports in an organization.
